Are you an SME considering the adoption of artificial intelligence? Here you can find all the information about the EU AI Act, opportunities, and support.

EU AI Act – what do I need to know?

What is the EU AI Act?

Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 — the AI Act — was adopted on 13 June 2024 and entered into force on 1 August 2024. It is the first comprehensive law on artificial intelligence in the world, applying to all companies developing or using AI systems in the EU market.

Key objectives:

  • Ensure AI systems are safe and trustworthy
  • Protect fundamental rights of individuals
  • Encourage innovation, especially for SMEs
  • Establish harmonised rules across the EU

What does the law determine?

The law introduces a risk-based approach — higher risk means stricter requirements.

Risk category Regulation level Examples
Prohibited systems Complete ban Social scoring, manipulative systems, emotion recognition in workplaces and schools
High-risk systems Strict requirements: documentation, oversight, testing HR tools, credit scoring, education systems, critical infrastructure
Limited risk Transparency requirements Chatbots (mandatory disclosure), deepfake content
Minimal risk No specific requirements Spam filters, AI in games

What do you need to do?

If your company develops or uses AI systems, we recommend the following steps:

  1. 1

    Check the risk category

Determine whether your system falls under prohibited, high-risk, or lower-risk categories.

  2. 2

    Ensure compliance

High-risk systems require proper documentation and procedures.

  3. 3

    Document the system

Keep records of the purpose, data, and operation of the AI system.

  4. 4

    Ensure human oversight

High-risk systems must be under appropriate human supervision.

  5. 5

    Be transparent

Inform users when they are communicating with an AI system.
